What I've learned in 10 years of my business
I started this business in January of 2013. (You know, the one that sends you this email every week?) Our twin girls were almost a year old and I was more than ready to go back to work. I had been a sex educator for a large company for a few years, but my intuition told me that I needed to build a business that was mine. I graduated with my Ph.D. two months before the girls were born, and I was itching to put it to good use. I really did find lots of purpose in raising the girls, even as hard as it was at first. But I was also needing to use my brain in different ways.
My first year working for myself was hilarious. Did I even make $47? I'm not sure. I knew NOTHING about building or running a business. I guess I just thought that if I built a website people would flock to get my help? Lolololol! Oh little baby Celeste was naïve.
I rented a therapist's office from her on the days she wasn't using it and started to ask OB/GYN offices and other therapists for referrals. I did presentations at churches and ladies groups in exchange for the opportunity to offer my services. I got a few clients here and there. (If you were one of the first, I'm just real sorry. And thank you for believing in me!)
Now it is 2023. Reflecting back on how I've grown as a provider and a business owner, I've learned a few things, and if you'll humor me, I'd like to share them.
Things I've learned in the first 10 years of my sex ed business
1. People are good, and they genuinely want good for others.
I really truly see this.
2. Sexuality is a beautiful place to be an educator, because there is so little helpful information that my small contributions can go a long way.
3. Sex is nuanced, complex and incredibly influenced by environment and context.
4. The men I see in my practice are kind, willing and lovely. They continue to give me hope of a dismantled patriarchy. I have a lot of faith in them to do so, starting with their own beliefs.
5) I'm super comfortable talking about anal play on a stage, but putting together an outfit to wear to stage gives me the heebie-jeebies.
6) Authentic vulnerability is magic. Not the I'm-going-to-overshare kind, the I'm-getting-in-the-arena-with-you kind.
Thank you for the privilege and honor to serve you over these last 10 years.
