How are you blending work and life?

This is my office.  Every time I step onto this holy ground I exhale.  This is where I meet you in video sessions and phone calls.  This is where I listen to your deepest secrets and hold space for your secret fantasies.

My office is located 23 steps from the back door of my house, smack dab between trees in my backyard.  We converted a large shed to my office in the fall of 2018.  In Jan of 2019 I went totally virtual with my practice.  I dropped the lease I had on an office space in town.

The purpose of me moving to the backyard office was to blend my work life and my home life.  I have always disliked the term "balancing" work and home.  It gives us the idea that some sort of equality is needed between the two in order for you to be a success.  I think thats just crap.  Striving for "equality" between your work life and your mothering and your social life and taking care of yourself and not getting COVID is non-sense.  There is no scale that can equally balance all of this.

I've found that that "blending" works better for me.  That doesn't set me up for being disappointed when I feel I've spent more time on work one day or too much time relaxing with my kids on another.  It's not about walking a carefully balanced tightrope, but rather blending up a smoothie of all your life's favorite things.

Please stop beating yourself up for not spending an equal amount of time or energy in each of your buckets.  Equal amounts of ingredients is not what makes a smoothie delicious.  It is the quality of the ingredients and your ability to blend them that makes it amazing.

For me, that meant a backyard office.

For you, that might mean kids having more screen time so you can write your work contracts.  Or walking the dog while you catch up with your girlfriend on the phone.  Maybe it means you ask for a permanent work from home arrangement.  Whatever it means for you, remember that blending is fluid and continuous and allows for imbalances.

Sometimes my kids run around in the backyard, just outside my picture window while I'm working on a presentation.  Sometimes between sessions I leave my office and run to the grocery store or do a load of laundry.  Sometimes I take a nap on my office couch.  It isn't equal or balanced.  It's blended

So tell me, what do you blend?
