For the Mothers Who Chose Us
This goes out to the mothers who chose us.
The step-moms, the bonus moms, the aunties, the mother in laws. The moms who took us in when they didn’t have to. They might not share your DNA, but they always have you in their heart.
My mother in law is one mom who chose me. She didn’t have to love me. After all, I did marry her one and only child. Many mother-in-laws could opt to cold shoulder that kind of intrusion.
But not mine.
I walked up her driveway with Nate for the first time in June of 2005. In love with her son, I wondered if she would like me. I desperately wanted her to like me.
She walked onto her porch, and I walked into her outstretched arms. She smelled like Channel Mademoiselle. Her laugh was clear, sweet and easy. Fifteen years later, her greeting is the same and her love has only grown.
I admire her for who she is as a woman and a business owner, but most of all, I admire the way she raised her son. She was a young single mom raising an independent young man (emphasis on independent). I'm sure it was not easy but she has an uncanny way of always noticing the good.
I'm positive the way she notices good is why I feel so loved by her. She consistently notices the good in me, in her grandkids and in our parenting. Nate and I say that if you ever need a confidence boost, you just have to call Deborah. She can help you notice the good parts of you that you may have overlooked.
I'm so lucky to have her in my life - to share a love of horses and big dogs and Nate (not in that order).
So here is to the moms who chose to love us. To see he good in us. They may not have your DNA, but they always have you in their heart.
Love.
