What my husband said when I wrote about our intimate life
Cheers to good men!
In 2018 I told Nate I wanted to write about our sex life. Specifically, how I struggled with pain at the beginning of our marriage. I wanted to write about it in a blog I had and in this very newsletter. Nate is practical and private. He doesn't use social media and I knew he might be hesitant for me to share this story because it obviously involves...him. I was nervous to tell him.
But I knew my story was not isolated or unique. I'd been consulting long enough to know that many women struggled with vaginismus and painful intercourse. I just knew that sharing my struggle and my path to pleasure would give somebody hope. And as much as it meant sharing private painful details of our life, it also meant becoming an even safer place for women to share their own story.
So, I asked Nate what he thought. And do you know what this man said?
He did not say, "I'll give you permission." Or "I guess that's fine with me."
He looked me straight in my eyes and said, "I trust you."
I know that misogyny and patriarchy are woven rigidly into the fabric of our lives, especially men, but Nate gives me so much hope of a world where men trust women. Men respect the opinions of women. Men listen to women. He is one of the greatest men I've ever known. And he keeps showing up for me in this way even after being together 20 years.
I published the story. And I was right. Nate was right to trust me. The most common thing women say when they meet me for a consult the first time is, "I read your story and it resonated."
Cheers to good stories and great men. May you know them both.
