Is my book religious?
Here's my answer:
“If God exists, I’m pretty sure They don’t give a crap about my vibrators.” —Me
No, this isn’t a religious book. But it is a faith-informed one. You can’t talk about purity culture without talking about the religious systems that built it.
I don’t go to church anymore. Sometimes I miss it…until I try to go back and leave angrier than I arrived. I just can’t sit calmly at tables meant to be flipped.
I no longer claim Christianity, because I believe its institutions have caused more harm than healing. The receipts are endless: colonization, crusades, queerphobia, abuse coverups, purity culture. Still, I think Jesus was a bold, non-white radical guy worth learning from. So I’ve just put my faith in Love instead. And She has never let me down.
You might still be in church. You might be deconstructing. You might be completely done. You’re welcome here, exactly as you are.
This book is hard on systems and soft on people. I will name the harm, but I will never shame your journey. I’ll be honest about the damage religion can cause, and I’ll honor whatever parts of your faith you still want to keep.
Purity culture tried to take away your agency. I won’t do that. You get to decide what to hold and what to release.
