I don’t know how to blow dry my hair..

At least I didn’t until recently.

I’m 41 years old with a mortgage, a 401K and 2 kids, but I don’t know how to blow dry my own hair.  At least I didn’t until last week, when I took a hair lesson from the most magical stylist, Kayden Grey Hair.  Kayden has been doing my hair for a while, and I admitted to him a bit ago that I felt lost drying my own hair.  More specifically, drying my hair looks like a tornado in a mop factory in Arizona.  Anytime I try, it takes forever and I leave the bathroom sweaty with frizzy, goofy hair that looked better sopping wet.

I’ve tried YouTube tutorials and even bought a hair book once, but I still couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.  I needed to talk to somebody.  I needed someone who could understand my hair, what I was doing incorrectly and give me specific suggestions.

Enter Kayden.  Not only is he a hair color wizard, but to watch him work a blow dryer and round brush is to witness greatness.  When he whips up my hair it’s like watching a super talented bartender flip and catch the liquor bottles before making you the fanciest, prettiest drink.   I leave his chair so happy.  Only to be disappointed a few days later when I have to wash out his masterpiece.

Last month, after explaining how I felt sad every time I had to blow dry my hair, he gently asked if I would like a blow dry lesson.  REALLY?  That’s a hard YES from me.

When I arrived for my hair lesson, I checked in with myself and I noticed I felt embarrassed.  Here I was a grown ass lady about to get a lesson on one of the most basic steps of self care.  I started to self-deprecate, my go-to defense against the awkward.

It’s so silly that I need a blow dry lesson, isn’t it.  Ha ha…ha.  I bet I’m the oldest person alive who can’t blow dry her hair…”

He quickly chimed in.  “It’s okay that you don’t know how to do this.  It’s hard to learn unless you have somebody to help you!

I felt miles better immediately.  Over the next two hours he taught me how to hold the round brush, where to point the dryer on the hair, how much tension to put on the brush, how to section and clip my hair so it wouldn’t be bananas and get in the way.   The suggestions were perfect for what I needed.

This week, I started practicing what I learned.  It was amazing what a few solid techniques did!  I am already so much better at the whole blow dry situation.  I’m feeling confident and so very happy I swallowed my pride and asked for help in an area that I felt (wrongly) like I should already have figured out.

It was a humbling experience as it reminded me about how many of you must feel when you come into the practice to talk about your sex life.  Many of you say you feel embarrassed that you don’t know how to make sex better or that you don’t like sex.  To quote Kayden, “It’s okay…it’s hard to learn unless you have somebody to help you!

Sex is especially hard to learn because the “modeling” we get is performative and unrealistic…and typically through a heteronormative male gaze.

So, I’m here to encourage you.  If you don’t feel comfortable with your sex life, please know that it’s okay to ask for help.  In fact, it’s quite normal to not know what to do unless you have a quality, realistic and compassionate education.

As always, I’m rooting for you!

With Love,

C
