Prioritizing play

You are built for pleasure. You are made for play!

Did you know it’s vulnerable and therefore connective to have fun with your partner? But getting silly together is weirdly more difficult than it sounds.

Doing things just for the fun of it with your partner gives you permission to find ease and space from the hard stuff, together. It’s not just a nice thing to do sometimes. It’s imperative to your functioning as a couple.

Sometimes I play golf with Nate. Correction… sometimes Nate plays golf and I ride along in a golf cart eating Doritos and scrolling Instagram. (I bring books with the intent to read them but normally they just sit in this slot in the golf cart that I’m only assuming is where books are supposed to go?)

Nate and I haven’t always been great at scheduling fun. As newlyweds it was easy peasy, even though we didn’t have much money, we still had loads of fun. Then med school, grad school and kids started to erode the natural margins for play. We realized we would have to be adult humans and prioritize doing stuff for the hell of it because it makes us laugh.

So now, we do that. Sometimes it looks like Nate playing golf and me eating Doritos in the golf cart. Sometimes it looks like us watching Stephen Colbert together. Sometimes it looks like walking the dogs together. Sometimes it looks like going to New York City to eat delicious food with our friends.

I recognize so much of this is a privilege, but I want to encourage you to find and prioritize space for fun together. It’s not a nice to have. It’s a have to have. Here’s your permission slip.

Love,

Celeste

SPOTLIGHT

MELVIN ROBERSON - DOUGH BOY DONUTS

Here's a Black owned business in Fort Worth that I LOVE! Meet Melvin Roberson, owner of Dough Boy Donuts. I'm a long term donut connoisseur and there is a reason why Melvin says, “You ain’t had a donut ’til you had a Dough Boy Donut!” Don't live in Fort Worth? No problem. You can still support this business by sending me a gift card and I'll go eat the donuts for you. You're welcome.
