What marriage is like after 14 years

It's my anniversary!

Fourteen years! My partner and I celebrated 14 years of marriage this week. How about that? Although we don't get to do it very often, one of our very favorite activities to do together is hike. We've been able to do some great hikes in the Tetons, Grand Canyon, Sandia Mountains and Hawaii.

This week, I got to thinking about how being in a committed relationship is a lot like hiking. It takes endurance, strength, a shared goal and a good map. So many things can affect your ability in any of these areas. You get tired, you want to go to different summits or you've lost your map. (For the record, my husband loves the All Trails App.) But we have found that when any of these things happen on the trail or in our marriage, the most important part is that we are there together to figure it out. And in many ways, reaching the summit, as lovely as it is, isn't our favorite part about hiking. Our favorite part is being there for each other, witnessing the same beauty and hardship.

So cheers to 14 years. And cheers to all my hikers out there, doing the hard work of being in a relationship with another amazing, flawed, wonderful and weird human.

And I'm sending so much love to all of you, and an extra big dose of appreciation to my darling husband Nathan. I love you!

We’ll chat soon, friend!
