All Hail Patron Saint of Whistle Register, Mariah Carey

There are the obvious reasons to love Mariah Carey. The voice, the range, the kind of supernatural talent. But today, on her birthday (anniversary!), I keep thinking about the quieter things I’ve learned from admiring her over the years.

 1. I love how unhurried she is. The way she talks, the way she moves, the way she performs. She is not trying to do everything at once. She stands there and sings, and that is enough. As a fellow “slow” human it feels lovely and validating.  She's super successful and has gotten there in no rush, just consistent work.  It reminds me that when you know what you’re good at, you don’t have to layer on a bunch of extra nonsense to prove it. When asked if she would want to go into space like Katy Perry, she just simply said, “I think I've done enough.” ICON.

 2. I think about her consistency a lot. She has been singing “Hero” for decades, and she still shows up and sings it like it matters. Because it does to us! She returns to the same thing over and over again and keep offering it with care. It makes me think differently about repetition, and how much patience is required to build something that lasts.

 3. She celebrates everything. Not just the big milestones, which are many, but the small, ordinary things. A good outfit, a holiday, a moment that feels good with her kids. She indicates in her book that because nothing was celebrated in her childhood, she wastes no opportunity to do that in adulthood.  Gah.  I want more of this.

4. I also appreciate how clear she is about what she will and will not engage in. That “I don’t know her” moment has lasted for a reason. There is ease in not picking up every invitation, especially the ones that lead nowhere good. She lets things pass by without needing to comment on all of it.  I love a clear boundary with a tiny bit of a sharp edge.

 5. Mariah takes up space. Fully. The word “diva” has been thrown at her in all kinds of negative ways, and she has continued to own her presence and reclaim the title without apology. Damn!

 6. Knowing that she has written or co-written most of her music makes all of this even more impressive. She was demanding to own her records early on…which has paved the way for other artists like Taylor Swift.  She has had a hand in shaping her career from the beginning, and she has stayed with it through a lot of different seasons. I respect that quiet persistence.

So today feels like a good day to borrow a little bit of that energy. To appreciate my slowness. To keep showing up to the things that matter to me, over and over. To notice something worth celebrating. And to let the rest be a little quieter.

That seems like a pretty good way to spend a day!  Happy birthday Mariah!
