Time to gift emotional labor to someone else

Hey friend,

How are you holding up? Getting through the slog of parties and gifts for people you barely know? I see you over there making the holidays magical. In fact, research indicates that women carry the brunt of the emotional and physical labor of Christmas, and so if you are feeling absolutely knackered, there's probably a good reason.

Listen, I want you to be sure you are being kind to yourself. Advocate for help. Drop shit that doesn't matter in the long run. Sit and enjoy wine by the tree while letting someone else wrap the gift for your dog walker. Pay someone to shop for you (shout out to my neighbor Margaret who saved me with some stocking stuffers!).

I'd love to encourage you to do just a little bit less this year...and repeat every year until you are the one golfing 3 out of the 5 days before Christmas.

With love and merriment,

Celeste

It's been 1 year + a day since bell hooks transitioned from this world and we are extra tender without her presence. My friend Erin introduced me to bell hooks a few years ago and I've been deeply impacted by her understanding of freedom, responsibility, justice and love. Please consider adding some of hook's work to your library. You will be transformed. To get started, click the button below to read her essay.
