When I'm told to "Stay in my lane."

Sometimes, when I speak up about anti-racism, I receive responses to "stay in my lane." These helpful senders believe I should only be speaking of sex education, nothing else.  Hmm...interesting.  Let's unpack, shall we?

My "lane" is actually a road that leads to the destination called Body Liberation.  I am a sex educator because I want people to feel empowered, have agency and find liberation in their sex lives. Think of me driving a bus called "Sex Ed." (You can imagine a 21 window VW Bus decked out in groovy colors and fueled by lube).  I know how to drive this particular bus toward Body Liberation because I am familiar with the obstacles in the road.  I've been intimately impacted by purity culture.  I've also figured out (and continue to figure out) how to navigate those purity culture potholes.  My work helps people get on my "Sex Ed Bus" and hopefully helps others get to Body Liberation.  This is how I drive in this lane.

Now, look around. There are other vehicles in the lane to Body Liberation.  You may also notice the cars labeled, "Anti-Racism," "Fat Liberation" "#metoo," "Gender Equality" and "Disability Justice" among many, many, many others.  All of these vehicles are on this road driving toward the destination of Body Liberation. Why? Because body liberation is only liberating if it is for ALL bodies.

So yes, this is my lane...and there are lots of other vehicles that lead to Body Liberation in this lane.   I drive my Sex Ed Bus, but sometimes I ride as a passenger in these other vehicles.  I try to stay involved with most of them.  And I would encourage you to understand and find your mode of transportation too!

Next week we will discuss the difference between drivers versus passengers on the road to Body Liberation.  Remember, this IS OUR lane.  So...

Get in friend, we are going Liberating!
