What old sexual ideas are ready to be donated?

I recently had the twins clean out their bin of stuffed animals and separate the ones they could donate. (Do not feel sad for these girls.  Their stuffed animal game is at museum level proportions.)

I was on the phone when Zoe tearfully walked into the room and handed me this sign to communicate to me without interrupting.

“We finished donating our stuffed animals.  We can now play.  And the reason that I'm crying is because donating toys you share memories with is hard and sad.”

Bless her tender little heart.

Letting go of stuff you share memories with IS in fact, hard and sad.

But also sometimes necessary in order to create some space.  Some breathing room to create.  Some space for potential.  The room for the new.

In my practice, I frequently hear the following sentence from clients.

"I wish sex was like it was when we were first together."  I get it.  Those memories that you shared are GREAT ones!  Hot and heavy sex, with the novelty of the unknown.  Less responsibilities, no kids, no crazy work schedules and certainly no quarantine.   It was a good time!

However, continuing to hold on to those memories as a placeholder for what sex should look like is limiting your ability to create something new.  It's crowding out the fresh ideas.

Our sex lives and sexual behaviors grow and change as we ourselves grow and change.  Illness, grief, stress, family issues, body changes, kids, responsibilities, environmental changes, mental health and a million other aspects of our life impact the way we engage with sex.  Sex is not supposed to look the same on day one as it does on day 10,000.

You will always have those memories.  They are beautiful and fun!  You don't ever have to give those up.  But letting go of the idea that those early days are the standard of "good" sex may be impeding your sex life from experiencing all the pleasure and connection you can experience today.

Time to donate "what should be" and make room for "what could be."

With Love,

Celeste
