To Have and to Hold…and Text…and Tweet

iphone on deskWhere does your phone sleep at night?  If your answer is any of the following, please keep reading.

  1. beside my bed
  2. beside my pillow
  3. clutched in my hand

Let me guess.  You like to have it close by because it is also your alarm clock.  And you want it there in case there is an emergency.  And you use it to help you fall asleep by playing Candy Crush.  And you sometimes like to listen to music.  And of course you like to check the news or weather first thing in the morning…because you just have to stay connected!

According to a study by telecommunications giant O2, people spent 119 minutes a day with their smartphone and only 97 minutes a day with their partner.  If we are what we do, what does this say about our priorities?

Now let me ask, where does your partner sleep at night?

    1. beside me in bed
    2. beside my pillow
    3. clutched in my hands

But have you recently considered why your partner sleeps next to you?  Is it because you like to wake up with someone who is a witness to your life?  And you want them there in case there is an emergency?  And you like having them close to help you fall asleep?  And you sometimes like to listen to their stories?  And you like to check in with them first thing in the morning to see what their day looks like…because you just have to stay connected!

If you have more reasons to have your phone close by than your partner, it may be time to consider an iBreakup.  Because maybe he actually has the best news feed of the day.  And maybe she is the perfect way to fall asleep.  And maybe you two are the greatest social network.

This week, let’s challenge ourselves to put down the electronics the minute you hit the sheets. You may just find the most authentic connection only inches away.
